Homecoming for LaShawn
by Eric Everett

This past Saturday, LaShawn was an honorary captain at Norfolk State's homecoming football game against Florida A&M -- an honor that meant a lot to the Virginian native.

The Olympic champion at 400 meters regularly uses the track at NSU's Price Stadium for training, so to be recognized here was, in a way, the culmination of years of training.

"I grew up in Portsmouth," he said. "All my life I've been coming to Norfolk State games. I was in the band in high school and I came to a band camp here. I love music and I love the football."

GRIDIRON SHOWDOWN
According to the Virginian-Pilot, LaShawn has an intriguing contest on the horizon.

Merritt is planning to race an NFL player during SuperBowl week, possibly Cincinnati wide receiver Chad Johnson. Johnson has been clocked at 4.54 in the 40.
