LaShawn Will Run 500 at Millrose
by Devon Jeffreys
The coming year is an important one on the outdoor circuit for LaShawn Merritt. But he announced this week that he'll be kicking off the 2012 track and field season at one of the nation's most prestigious indoor events.
LaShawn will begin his 2012 campaign by attempting to break the indoor record in the 500m at the Millrose Games.
LaShawn has signed on to run the 500-meter race at the 105th Millrose Games at The Armory in New York. The distance will be 100 meters farther than his best event, the 400m, and LaShawn is excited for the challenge.
"I am really looking forward to racing the 500m at the historic Millrose Games in the Armory and my attempt to break the World Indoor Record," he said.
The current World Indoor Record in the 500m is held by Ken Lowery, who ran the race in 1:00.17 back in 1987. LaShawn set the fastest mark of 2011 in the 400m when he ran a 44.35 during qualifying for the World Championships. It was just his second event of the season.
If that 400 split is any indication, Lowery's record could be in serious jeopardy at the Millrose Games.
"If anyone can break it, it's LaShawn," Millrose Games meet director Ray Flynn said. "This will be another spectacular race at the Armory."
The 105th Millrose Games take place on Saturday, February 11, 2012 inside the New Balance Track & Field Center at The Armory. Click here for ticket information.
