Lending a Leg
by Joe Luther
LaShawn was part of the team that took first-place in the 4x400 relay Saturday at the Hampton University Invitational.
Running as part of the Dwayne Miller Track Club relay team, the Olympic 400m champion led his squad to a first place finishing time of 3:19.60. He ran the second of four legs.
As reported by the Daily Press:
In Beijing, the Portsmouth native outsprinted teammate-rival Jeremy Wariner in the 400 meters for his first gold medal, then ran a leg of the Americans' victorious 4x400 relay. Merritt also ran 400 meters Saturday at the Sportsplex — but as part of a first-place relay. He took the baton on the second of four legs for the Dwayne Miller Track Club, which finished in 3 minutes, 19.60 seconds to beat collegiate competition. Norfolk State was second at 3:20.35, while HU, led by anchor Yaphet Cross' late push, took third in 3:22.15.
Though not as presitigious as his gold in Beijing, the win shows just how dominant a relay team fielding LaShawn can be.
