Update From Paris
by LaShawn Merritt
I've been busy since my victory in the 400 meters last month at the U.S. Olympic track and field trials. But I took some time -- while in Paris -- to answer some questions from Virginian-Pilot sports reporter Larry Rubama.
What was it like to win the U.S. Olympic trials?
The Olympic Trials felt great. It was my first U.S. title and this is the big year to win it.
How has winning the title changed your life?
It really hasn't changed too much. It's the U.S. Championship title but now I'm trying to be the Olympic champion.
After your last race with defending Olympic champion Jeremy Wariner, there was a quote from you criticizing the lane assignments.
It wasn't just the lane assignment. Some political things took place before the meet that I didn't agree with. They didn't give me the respect that I have earned. But it all went well. A lane is lane. It's still 400 meters.
What is your running schedule for the next two weeks?
I just ran a 200 in Greece (He ran 20.26). I run in Paris tomorrow (July 18 against Jeremy Wariner in the 400 meters). Then I'll be home training before I go to China.
What's your favorite city to visit thus far?
Monaco
Who is your closest friend on the track circuit right now?
My closest friend would have to be my bed (lol). I love my bed. Without it I would be tired and wouldn't be able to perform like I do.
Final word: I just want to say I love VA and the whole 757. Thanks for believing in me and I'm going to bring it home.
