The Rivalry Continues
by Eric Everett
Just days after defeating Jeremy Wariner in Beijing to take the Olympic gold medal in the 400 meters, LaShawn returned to the track Friday night in Zurich's Weltklasse AF Golden League meet.
The 2008 Olympic champion finished second to Wariner, who posted a season best 43.82 -- the fastest time in the world this year after LaShawn's Beijing race.
Stiil, IAAF.org put the race into its proper perspective:
Wariner’s time was his season’s best. Notably only Merritt’s win in Beijing of 43.75 is faster in 2008, but that will be the one that lives in the memory. Such is the ultimate reality of all post Olympic comebacks even when as impressive as the one Wariner produced today.
Virginia's best clocked a 44.43, well below most of the times he ran in China.
