True Inspiration
by Matt Martino
LaShawn, a two-time gold medalist, is more than just a national champion. His influence spans the entire globe, all the way down-under to Australia.
Sean Wroe, who turns 24 tomorrow, remembers LaShawn’s performance two years ago in Australia when he ran both the 400m and 200m races.
Wroe, already the favorite for the Australian championship in the 400, plans on imitating LaShawn. He hopes that doubling up in the Australian track and field championships, starting on Thursday, will help him achieve bigger goals in the long run.
"The reason why we’re doing it here is to put the body under so much stress that it’s going to simulate going through rounds at a world championships or a Beijing kind of level," said Wroe, who was run out in the 400m semis at the 2008 Games."
"Running two 400s wasn’t going to be enough. Looking at LaShawn two years ago, he ran the 400 and popped out a 45.2 (seconds) and then 45 minutes later ran 20 seconds for the 200."
"They’re the kind of athletes I need to compete against and beat so it was a matter of matching up to that and doing it."
